DENTISTRY IN SLEEP MEDICINE
17 novembre 2018

How to avoid, prevent, and manage sleep disorders.

Sleep disorders in dentistry have an important relevance, particularly as far as bruxism and the syndrome of apnea disorders that disturb sleep are concerned.
Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) and habitual and chronic snoring as its clinically relevant symptom and often as the initial phase of a disorder that tends to worsen in time, constitute an increasingly important medical and social issue in the medical-scientific community. OSAS per se constitutes a risk factor for cardio- and cerebral-vascular conditions and for arterial hypertension, and as such, it must be diagnosed and possibly treated in the most suitable manner for each individual patient. Among the useful therapies, in recent years endoral orthodontic appliances have attained key importance as a mechanical measure suitable for treating patients affected by OSA of a non-serious nature or who cannot tolerate nighttime mechanical ventilators (such as the CPAP) or who choose a type of non-invasive treatment to eliminate even just the snoring.
